Tips For Getting Rid Of Household Ants

Blog

Do you have ants in your home and are not sure what to do about them? You're likely looking for ways to get rid of them for good. Here are a few tips that will help you do it.

Indoor Treatment

The easiest way to get rid of indoor ants is with bait traps. You'll want to use protein and carb-based bait traps to ensure that you are putting out the right bait that is going to attract the ants to it. The goal is to lure the ants to take the bait, which has been coated with a chemical that will kill the ants back at their nest when they take the bait there.

These bait traps can be placed in the areas where ants tend to travel most in your home, which may be along the baseboards, under your appliances, inside kitchen cabinets, or near doors where they come in from the outside. Just make sure to not put the bait trap directly in the trail that the ants travel on, since blocking their path can cause them to make a new one. Make sure to check the bait traps periodically to make sure that the bait is not all gone. You may need to replace the bait traps periodically.

The alternative to bait traps is an ant spray. The spray is not an ant repellent; it is a slow-working pesticide. The ants walk through the pesticide and take it back to their nest. You will apply the ant spray to those paths where the ants are walking, and they will carry the pesticide back to their colony with their feet. The pesticide works so slowly that an ant can even ingest the pesticide, travel back to their colony, and die there, where the body decomposes and releases more pesticide.

Outdoor Treatment

Treating ants outside your home will involve some different products that will hopefully kill the ants before they enter your home. A popular method is to use granules, which are another slow working pesticide that rests on top of the soil near your home. The goal is that the granules are taken back to the colony and used as food.

Ant spray can also be applied generously to the home's foundation and places where ants could get into the home. You may want to use an outdoor spray instead of an inside spray if you have pets or children in your home and don't want them going near the pesticide.
